Genau das war es, was Steve Jobs sagte, als er 2008 auf der WWDC das iPhone 3G vorstellte. Aber stimmt das? Ist es wirklich diese "riesen Sache"? OK, man kann sich selbst auf einer Karte orten, aber wer braucht das? NIEMAND! Was wir brauchen ist ein Navigationssystem, welches dir bescheid sagt, wann und wo du abbiegen musst!

am Dienstag, den 2. September 2008 wurde die erste öffentliche "alpha" version von xGPS entwickelt. xGPS ist ein Navigationssystem, welches auf den Karten von Google Maps aufbaut und sowohl auf dem iPod Touch (1G/2G) und dem iPhone(3G) läuft. Ein GPS Modul wird vorausgesetzt. Man kann es bereits jetzt in version 1.1.0 via Cydia downloaden (Source: cydia.xwaves.net).

Der Release für Version 1.2 ist für den 20. Februar 2009 geplant. Diese kommt, neben dem was es sowieso schon kann, mit einem Nachtmodus und man kann während dem Navigieren mit der App Music mit der iPod App hören, aber die größte und bedeutenste änderung ist, dass es nun Sprach-Navigation gibt!
“A first beta version of voice navigation in English is now implemented and the speech engine does a pretty good job of pronouncing the directions (see the first video above). It will need some future tweaks to correctly pronounce abbreviations (like Rd, Blvd, Pkwy, N, E, S, W, slashes, etc), but other than that it does a very good job. It would also be nice if the user could set the distance(s) at which voice directions are given; they are currently set at about 400m and 20m before the next turn.“
Dies sollte das erste wirkliche Navigationssystem auf dem iPhone/iPod Touch sein!
